The popularity of motorhomes and campervans is booming with record numbers of vehicles sold in the past year.
As the growth in UK holidays continues, 16,608 new motorhomes were registered with the DVLA in the 12 months from July 1st, 2020 to the end of June 2021 – an 8.25 percent increase on the previous record of 15,342 in the same period in 2018/2019.
The total value of sales of new motorhomes is the highest it has ever been, now nearing £1.15 billion per annum, with campervan sales particularly buoyant.
Here at Caravan Guard, we’re also seeing an increasing number of motorhome and campervan insurance policies as owners choose our award-winning motorhome insurance cover.
John Lally, Director General of the National Caravan Council (NCC), the UK trade association for the leisure vehicle industry, said: “COVID-19 restrictions on travel have helped, as the industry offers ‘social distance by design’ products. The industry is successfully attracting a new, younger customer while retaining existing ones.”
At Caravan Guard we’ve seen a 60 percent increase in the number of our customers who are in their 30s.
Our Marketing Director Craig Thompson said: “We find that one of the reasons younger people are buying motorhomes is to use them as an everyday vehicle. Rather than owning two vehicles, they’re buying vehicles like a van-derived camper as their sole transport, offering them the flexibility to use to commute to work or for a weekend getaway.”
The record level of production of motorhomes to satisfy this growing market is even more impressive given many UK industries are faced with empty order books and a struggle to obtain raw materials and labour due to a combination of Brexit and the pandemic. Even last year, when manufacturers and dealerships were closed in the first lockdown, the industry managed to achieve 9,964 registrations in the July 2019 – June 2020 period.
Mr Lally continues: “It has been a challenge for firms to meet the demand, but they have risen to it and the resourcefulness, dependability and professionalism they have showed is reflected in these record figures. Motorhome manufacture has become a British success story as firms have a well-deserved reputation for design and innovation which, coupled with investment in more sophisticated production processes, helped to see them through these unprecedented times – and grow.”
Craig urged new motorhome and campervans to make sure their insured value is correct at renewal so owners are fully covered and not paying for too little or too much cover.
And with worries over motorhome theft, he stressed the importance of both visible security devices, and electronic motorhome security.
Good quality, Sold Secure standard steering wheel locks, security posts and wheel locks might make a thief move on to an easier target or will slow them down,” said Craig. “But we’d recommend a proactive, Thatcham approved tracking device to increase the chances of a recovery should your motorhome be stolen.”
