When you arrive at your chosen pitch after a long journey, an important job is to level your caravan. An automatic levelling system will stabilise your caravan in minutes without the need for spirit levels and wheel chocks.
But do you have one fitted to your caravan? In this month’s community poll we’re asking if you have an automatic levelling system on your caravan? Simply vote below:
What is a caravan levelling system?
An automatic levelling system on your caravan typically uses hydraulic or electric jacks to adjust a caravan’s position until it’s stable and level, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. These systems are deployed using either a remote control or a control panel.
Caravan levelling systems offer improved stability and will make your stay more comfortable, as well as making sure your caravan fridge works efficiently by being level, and that waste water from the sinks and shower drain effectively. They also provide added theft protection as the hydraulic jacks have to be retracted before thieves can move your caravan.
But these systems do come at a cost, with ‘vanners having to pay in excess of £2500 for most systems.
Over to you…
We’d love to hear from you. Do you already use an automatic levelling system on your caravan? Are you considering upgrading? Or are you happy sticking to manual caravan levelling methods? Let us know in the comments below.
We’ll report back the results in March 2025.
We bought a coachman laser with the E&P as standard ,I find it easy and quick to use my only worry is what if you arrive on site and it won’t lower the jacks
We have an E&P system fitted from new, automatic levelling is great but on a steepish sloped pitch you can use the manual option. Annoying that you can’t put the Jack’s down one at a time when using chocks.
We have caravanned for years and never had any problems with levelling up within minutes of arrival.. But since being new to motorhoming we have found levelling up with wheel ramps a real nightmare in some cases and have been looking at the automatic levelling systems available and would really like to see an article on them and what the different choices are and the relative costs of each system.
Thanks Andrew. We’ll be looking into this next month
I bought a Buccaneer Commadore last year and it came with the self leveling system. Having had various caravans since 2003 without the system this is an added luxury, one which I wish I would have always had. However on previous caravans additional cost and added weight of these systems would have meant I would never have purchased it. I think all manufacturers should consider adding these systems as standard, especially on the higher end models. Buying in bulk by manufacturers surely could/would bring the costs down for the end purchase. Using the system just gives you peace of mind the caravan is set up correctly every time you use it. One less thing to worry about.
I thought about fitting one but i think the cost outweighs the benefits
In 30 plus years of caravanning I have never failed to adequately level my caravan with my eyes ! A levelling system is very costly and a luxury created without a true need …. in my opinion.
good for us older caravaners
Too short an article. Benefits of levelling include fitting of Alko wheel locks as well as stability, level, bed level, fridge operation and waste drainage.
I have a full automatic system on front and rear legs and two middle jacks by E&P system. My caravan is a elddis Avante 550 2019/20.
Takes up too much of the available loading margin
Most levelling systems seem to be four hydraulic rams and electronics to level in one operation (expensive)
The most that is required is two rams on the axel to give side to side levelling, jockey wheel does front to back and normal steadies, all at less than half of the cost of the above system!
Yes I had E&P fitted on my 2018 Swift conquer about 3 years ago initially it was ok after 6 months or so it failed. To it back and they installed new control unit FOC I have had no trouble since good piece of kit very useful but a whole lot of money .
Interesting subject. Has anyone ever tested the stress effects of auto levelling systems on a caravan floor? It can be easy to over adjust and bend upwards the corners of a caravan. Especially the front, where the chassis hardly supports the corners.
Very interesting, I had an after market one fitted when I bought our new caravan in 2018, I have found it very good and easy to use, the van (twin axle VIP 675) is a lot firmer with the E&P system than just the steadies lowered it is also very much easier to fit the two Alco wheel locks.
