For the 2025 season, there’s an even greater choice of awnings for campervans and motorhomes.
Awnings for all
Everything from models specific to campervans, van conversions or coachbuilt motorhomes, and from a straightforward canopy to a fully enclosed unit complete with extra bedroom inners and more.
Whatever you go for, campervan or motorhome awnings add extra versatility in terms of shelter, storage and all-round accommodation, no matter what style of motorhome you own.
Read on for some key advice as well as a round-up of some interesting new models from key awning manufacturers.
Top campervan and motorhome awning tips
- Do make sure you have space to safely stow an awning for travel (it shouldn’t be left loose). Bear in mind any motorhome awning will have an effect on your payload capacity, too.
- Depending on what you want to use your awning for, there may well be opportunities to upgrade to ancillary kit (lighting, storage etc), sleeping areas and more.
- All campervan and motorhome awnings come with a carrybag, unless otherwise stated. Make sure you get a bag that’s significantly larger than the packed awning – they’re always easier coming out than packing back in again. Also, the sturdier the better.
- Similarly, all awnings will be supplied with awning pegs…but they will vary in style and quality.
- Check how the awning is to be attached to your campervan or motorhome and what fixing arrangements are on offer. If you don’t already have an awning rail on your motorhome there will probably be a way of having one added, or alternative attachment methods can be offered. Whatever the scenario, check the beading (also referred to as kador) measurements needed – they do vary.
- Consider adding a footprint. This is a hard-wearing section of material that helps minimalise damage if you’re pitching on particularly harsh ground.
- Some campervan and motorhome awnings offer better rain protection than others. A hydrostatic head rating (the higher the figure the better) for the main fabric will indicate how waterproof the main fabric is.
- Consider if you want an air or poled awning. Air awnings tend to be bulkier and heavier but there’s less likelihood of poles causing damage to your motorhome or campervan in the event of a storm or during the putting up/taking down process.
- And don’t forget to take down your campervan or motorhome awning or wind in your canopy if stormy weather is forecast to protect it – and its contents – from damage.
