Before you can truly relax at your campsite, making sure your motorhome is level is essential. For some, this means using ramps and spirit levels, while for others, it’s as simple as pressing a button thanks to an automatic motorhome self-levelling system.
In our recent community poll, we asked motorhome owners: “Do you have an automatic levelling system?”
The automatic levelling poll results
After more than 400 votes, opinions were split – here’s how motorhome owners responded:
- 39% said no – they stick to traditional levelling methods
- 37% said yes – they enjoy the convenience of an automatic system
- 24% said they’re considering a self levelling system – but cost and weight are key considerations
Automatic levelling systems use hydraulic or electric jacks to adjust your motorhome’s position, improve stability, make sure your fridge operates efficiently, and help water drain properly in your shower. Plus, they add an extra layer of security, making it difficult for thieves to drive away with your motorhome. Some even feature a tilt function to help with draining water tanks and wheel changes.
But with costs exceeding thousands of pounds for a retrofit system, is it worth the investment? For many, the convenience of pressing a button and achieving a perfectly level motorhome is worth the cost. Others are happy to stick with ramps and save their money. Here’s what some of you had to say…
Your automatic levelling comments
Del has a 2023 motorhome and has considered automatic levelling, but for him the price tag is too expensive at present: “I’m sure prices will come down as more people use them,” he added.
Peter Evetts agreed: “Nice to have, but very expensive and heavy. I don’t have the funds or the load allowance.”
David also thought automatic levelling was a luxury rather than a necessity. “Nothing wrong with levelling ramps, but as I get older, I can see the appeal,” he commented. “If you can afford the £6000 price tag, go for it!”
John Kerr Glendinning has been motorhoming for seven years: “I’ve only used ramps a couple of times,” he said. “Near enough is good enough for me! If you’ve got the money, go for it. Otherwise, go to the pub.”
These motorhome owners have taken the plunge and invested in automatic levelling systems:
Marc Gransden has a MA-VE system on their motorhome, and referred to as “the ultimate luxury”.
He told us that they can set up in seconds: “The added benefits include security (makes theft harder), safety (easier wheel changes), and convenience,” he said. “Expensive, but some of the best money we’ve ever spent.”
Ian Templeton bought an HPC system after seeing the advantages while touring Scandinavia.
“We even had it transferred to our new motorhome because we wouldn’t be without it.,” said Ian. “It’s lightweight and very effective.”
Graham Bonnet has the TESA electro-mechanical auto levelling jacks: “They fold away neatly and were more affordable at £3400,” said Graham. “They’re ideal for vehicle maintenance and wheel changes.”
Ian Hatten is a solo traveller and doesn’t want to rely on someone guiding him up ramps: “The hydraulic kit was an ideal (if expensive) solution,” he said. “I can level my van in minutes.”
