If you haven’t already got a fridge, a coolbox makes a perfect addition to your leisure vehicle. But, even if you have… well, you might just find a separate coolbox – power-free or operating from 12V, 230V or gas, or even all three – can prove itself equally indispensable.
The easy chill
Not only can you get extra cooling space for your food and drinks, a portable coolbox is also perfect for transferring chilled items out of your fridge when it comes to days away from the ‘van, e.g. a trip to the beach, too! Or even keeping in your awning to avoid traipsing indoors to the fridge for a cold drink or snack.
You might also consider a coolbox if you regularly carry items that don’t fit in your caravan or motorhome fridge.
Here’s our round-up to coolboxes for caravanning, campervanning and motorhoming.
Top coolbox tips
- Capacity: Obvious, really, but do think about what exactly you want to keep in your coolbox? Drinks containers that are too large for your vehicle fridge? Food you’d rather keep separate? A full picnic to carry to the beach?
- Cooling performance: You’ll want to get the best cooling performance from your coolbox. Look for models with advanced compressor technology or high-quality insulation materials that can maintain the desired temperature for an extended period.
- Power Source: Check the power source. If you want to be that bit more environmentally friendly, you could go for a coolbox that doesn’t use any power directly. Some coolboxes have options for running on portable power sources like batteries or solar panels.
- Weight: Consider the weight of a coolbox. You don’t want anything too heavy especially if payload is at a premium.
- Durability: Look for a cool box that is built to withstand the demands of travel and outdoor adventures. Durable materials, sturdy construction, and features like reinforced corners and weather-resistant seals can help make sure your cool box stands up to the rigours of your touring adventures.
- Insulation quality is crucial for maintaining the internal temperature of your coolbox. Look for models with thick insulation and features like double walls to help prevent heat exchange and keep your contents colder for longer.
- Consider extra features like smart technology to monitor and control the temperature remotely. Or maybe compartments, dividers, or even integrated cup holders.
- Ideally, pre-cool any items you’re going to put in your coolbox.
- Only open your coolbox as necessary. Close its lid as soon as you can.
- As ever, make sure you have a suitable spot to put a coolbox in your leisure vehicle, especially for safe travel. Remember our tips for caravan loading or motorhome loading.
