Caravan security is a top priority for many caravanners – and theft of valuable caravanning equipment is also a concern. But how many owners take the extra step of security marking their caravanning kit?
In our recent community poll, we asked caravanners whether they security mark their caravanning gear. The results are in and opinions are split….
The caravan security marking poll results
Out of almost 100 respondents, 57 percent said they actively security mark their caravanning gear, whilst 43 percent said they don’t.
So, although many caravanners are taking steps to safeguard their equipment, there’s still a significant number who might not be aware of the benefits of security marking or haven’t yet done this.
Security marking is a cost-effective way to increase the chances of recovering precious caravanning items if they do get stolen. Marked items are less attractive to criminals because they’re harder to sell on and can be traced back to their owners. It involves labelling your valuables with your postcode, or unique ID such as the last six digits of your caravan’s VIN number, or using advanced methods like UV pens, microdots, or RFID chips like those found in the VIN Chip Plus kits.
Some caravan insurance specialists, like Caravan Guard, also offer discounts for using security-marking kits.
What can be security marked?
Common items that caravanners mark include:
- Camping furniture
- Electronics (like TVs, sat navs or stereo systems)
- Gas bottles and portable BBQs
- Awnings
- Bikes
Security marking, combined with other safety measures like hitchlocks, axle wheel locks, corner steady locks, door and window locks and alarms, significantly reduces the risk of theft.

It is a good idea to do security mark your property, and not just for the caravan. I am sure everyone has CRIS registration as a basic precaution. It would have been an interesting follow-up question to ask “If you do mark your equipment, have you ever been the victim of theft of your caravan equipment and then recovered it because it was marked?” In other words how effective is it in practice?
