A half a million cash boost from our family business has allowed a local hospice to break ground on its new state-of-the-art 16-bed building.
Work has now begun on creating a £12.75m hospice in Calderdale and it’s hoped that the new centre will open within 18 months.
Donations of more than £500,000 from Caravan Guard will fund five new in-patient bedrooms within the Big Build development. These will help the hospice improve levels of care and comfort for those with life-limiting illnesses.
On March 7th 2025, the hospice held a breaking ground ceremony as the diggers moved in to start the build.
At the event, Caravan Guard Associate Director Laura Wilby (right) said: “Overgate Hospice is a charity close to our hearts, so when given the chance to help create a centre fit for the future, we had to be involved.
“Our company’s support of Overgate began after a personal experience of the care they provide, and it has just naturally grown and grown – to the point where our staff jump at the chance to get behind any Overgate fundraising initiative.”
Our family-run business has a strong culture of supporting charitable causes and its staff and owners care completely about helping others and get behind many of Overgate’s fundraising initiatives, including the Colour Run, Christmas bag packing and Christmas jumper day, helping sort through clothing donations, as well as the Overgate Heroes campaign and Overgate Lottery.
The current hospice, which is over 30 years old, has 12 beds in shared bays. The new centre will mean the existing building can be repurposed to create a larger, refurbished day hospice accommodating more people than ever before.
Our donation will pay for five rooms and contribute to a lasting legacy. We’ve chosen the following rooms as the colours of these flowers mirror the colours of our company logo: Snowdrop, Bluebell, Rose Room, Sweet Pea and Magnolia.
Our staff have also provided messages of love and support for the foundation stone of the new Hospice and shared memories of loved ones who have been cared for there.
Tracey Wilcocks, chief executive of Overgate Hospice, said: “To break ground after years of planning and fundraising is both a surreal and moving moment. Caravan Guard’s donation is just unbelievable and we can’t thank them enough.
“Very soon, the new hospice will begin to take shape and we will turn our dream into a reality – creating a state-of-the-art centre for all our patients and families.”
