Designed to improve vehicle safety some new campervans and motorhomes will have Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (or ADAS) in their windscreens. Here we explain more and what happens if you need a motorhome or campervan windscreen replacement and you have an ADAS.
Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems use a combination of cameras and sensors that are often built into a campervan or motorhome windscreen to alert the driver to potential problems and avoid a collision.
Common types of ADAS include:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Adaptive headlights
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Blind spot awareness
- Lane departure warning
- Traffic sign recognition
What if I damage my campervan or motorhome windscreen and I have an ADAS?
Most safety systems rely on a group of cameras or sensors to do their job. They usually sit inside a vehicle’s windscreen and when a glass replacement is carried out, its angle and position change. A windscreen calibration is needed to correct this so that your vehicle’s safety features are working as intended.
If a recalibration is missed out, a safety feature might not work like it should and could cause a potential risk to you and other road users.
What is a windscreen recalibration?
A windscreen recalibration correctly aligns the cameras and sensors of a campervan or motorhome so that its driver-assist systems can work as intended.
There are two different types of recalibrations depending on the vehicle having the windscreen repair:
Dynamic recalibration involves driving the vehicle to complete the process
Static recalibration takes place at an Autoglass® centre, where levelled flooring and specialist equipment is used to make sure a successful windscreen recalibration is completed
Campervan or motorhome windscreen replacements
In the 2022 season (April 1st to September 30th), over 80 per cent of settled motorhome insurance claims were for window damage.
Caravan Guard motorhome or campervan insurance customers can call our dedicated windscreen helpline if they have any damage to their windscreen. You’ll be put straight through to our approved glass repairer Autoglass® and they’ll arrange for a technician to repair any damage.
Campervans and motorhome van conversions which have ADAS technology in their windscreen will need to have a repair or windscreen replacement and recalibration carried out at an Autoglass® branch. This cannot be done at the roadside or at the customer’s address because of the specialist equipment used.
“Autoglass® uses leading technology to carry out recalibrations for a wide range of vehicle makes and models,” said Joe Hilton, from Autoglass®. “Our expert technicians will calibrate to the manufacturer’s required standard at the same time as your windscreen replacement, with an aim to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

Good article. Would have been nice to know if standard insurance policies covered recalibration, or what the approximate cost would be. Thanks
Hi Gary, the cost of the recalibration would be covered under our policy.
