Bilbo’s Komba SE
The Komba is part of the new ‘SE’ range introduced by Bilbo’s.
The aim is to build an affordable camper that doesn’t compromise on quality – or lose the appeal of the VW T5 base vehicle.
To reduce prices to below £30,000 Bilbo has stripped the SE models of some of their equipment, although each vehicle still retains Bilbo’s fantastic build-quality, comfortable and easy-to-make beds, and one of the best elevating roofs in the business.
The options list is available should you want anything added back in.
Inside the Bilbo’s Komba
The Komba sports the classic VW camper layout, with its swivelling cab seats, rear bench and side kitchen.
This layout always feels spacious, and despite the lower specification, the Komba SE still has everything you’ll need for a comfortable trip away, including a 50-litre Waeco Coolmatic compressor fridge, a two-burner hob and sink and two tables – one that attaches via a rail to the front of the kitchen unit and the other on an island leg beside the swivelled passenger seat.
There’s neither a grill nor a designated cutlery drawer, but there are plenty of storage cupboards, some with shelves. The rising roof doesn’t feature a light, but there are two strip lights either side of the living quarters, as well as two bendy stalk spotlights for the occupants of the front seats.
The back of the Komba
This vehicle looks very smart too, with its car-like grey patterned upholstery, with vinyl inserts pepping-up the cab seats. The furniture units are dark grey, and the underside of the roof is carpeted. As usual, the double bed is very easy to make, and a roof bed suitable for two little ones is offered as an option.
Verdict:
This is a great multi-purpose vehicle that comes under the two-metre height limit, and a family of five can travel in it as the rear bench has two three-point belts as well as a harness-style belt in the centre. This secures a third rear passenger rather more safely than the lap restraint that you might have expected.
The Komba SE is a derivation of the original best-selling Bilbo’s Breakaway, so it’s a tried and tested formula. And with this new lower price tag it’s sure to become more popular than ever.
