You’ll be impressed by the overall specification of Chausson’s Titanium 788. And even more surprised by its price.
More metal for your money?
Starting at well under £80,000, it’s a clever reworking of the kind or rear island bed motorhome layout that typically means an overall length of 7.50m or more. Yet the Titanium Ultimate 788 motorhome manages to get that down to 7.20m without any real feeling of space lost in the living quarters.
The base vehicle is Ford’s Transit chassis-cab where there’s no sparing on anything, least of all the horses. Titaniums (there are five models in the range) get the top-level 170bhp engine as standard, allied to a six-speed automatic gearbox as well as a high-level of cab kit: an Xzent infotainment system with DAB radio, satnav, Bluetooth connectivity and rear-view camera, heated windscreen, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers and more, along with the now-to-be-expected air conditioning, cruise control, steering wheel controls etc. Safety features abound, too.
On, this model, Chausson adds an all-GRP (including underside) coachbuilt body with a seven-year water ingress warranty. The 16in black alloy wheels, awning, overcab sunroof, solar panel, external gas outlet, shower attachment point and flush-fitting windows are all standard, as is the Technibox – a nearside locker that’s home to the fresh water tank filter as well as circuit breakers and fuses.
There’s also a garage, accessible from the rear and the nearside; while the gas locker is on the offside. Worth noting, too, the habitation door is 60cm wide, although it’s on the UK offside.
On-site, the Chausson Titanium Ultimate 788 motorhome lounge comprises two inward-facing settees, swivelled cab chairs and a fully adjustable pedestal leg table with a hinged top. If you want to up the travel seating quota to four, there are forward-facing seats in the base of each settee.
As ever with arrangements like this, the view out for rear seat passengers is rather restricted.
The kitchen is along the nearside mid-‘van. It has a space-efficient Thetford Triplex cooker with two gas burners and an electric hotplate, plus combined oven and grill. To its left is a circular stainless steel sink under which sits a cutlery drawer, but overall storage and worktop are constricted (later models do get a worktop extension, however).
There are no qualms about the fridge/freezer. It’s a generous 142-litre total capacity, a slimline model with automatic energy selection.
Beyond the kitchen, washroom facilities are split between a shower cubicle and a toilet room, both very well equipped.
The shower room is fully lined, while the shower itself is on a riser bar. Underfoot are twin plugholes, overhead a drop-down rail for wet clothing etc.
Over on the offside of the Chausson Titanium Ultimate 788 motorhome, the toilet room’s solid door can also be used to give privacy from the kitchen and lounge. Facilities include a swivel-bowl toilet and a part-sunk basin. There’s also plenty of locker storage, along with details such as the toothbrush mug and soap holders.
There’s sliding door access to the rear bedroom, which boasts a 1.90 x 1.60m double, with curved storage units to either side (a wardrobe nearside, shelved cupboard offside), each with a small ledge suitable for smaller items like spectacles, glass of water etc.
A handy facility is that the bed can be wound up or down (manually) depending on whether getting onto the mattress or optimising space in the garage below is the priority.
Heating is a Webasto diesel-fuelled system (it can also be used on the move), with Truma supplying the hot water. You also get plenty of interior lighting and power sockets (USB and mains) and a good level of ventilation (including an electric roof fan in the bedroom).
As for the rest of the specification on the Chausson Titanium Ultimate 788 motorhome, let’s just say the only optional extras from the factory are an electric drop-down double bed over the lounge and a towbar. Everything else you can see here is standard. If you do go for the former, do note the payload drops to 333kg, which is rather low for a full-four-berth motorhome – although it’s unlikely you’ll need to add any more to the overall kit count.

Verdict: High-spec’/low price winning Ford-based formula
Plus: Superb specification for the money, large permanent bed (with drop-down option), at a realistic price
Minus: Upholstery lacks a quality feel, limited kitchen storage
In-a-nutshell: The usual Chausson blend of price, kit and a generous seasoning of innovation
Alternatives: Auto-Trail F-Line F74, Bailey Adamo 75-4I, Roller Team Zefiro 696, Swift Voyager 494

All was looking good for this new model unti I noticed the towing limit of 750 kg. Shame, could have been an option for the future. My Dethleffs can tow max 2000kg.
