An Auto-Trail motorhome at a bargain price. That’s always going to be worth more investigation. 2024 sees the Grimsby-based manufacturer that’s part of the Trigano empire announcing a new range and recalling an old name, Excel.
An Excel-lent start?
The 620G is one of four initial Auto-Trail Excel motorhomes. All are based on Ford’s Transit chassis-cab with six-speed manual transmission (with auto’ among the options). Only the 620G has the lower-powered 130bhp unit, but there’s the opportunity to move up to the 170bhp offering. You also get a choice of five cab colours.
In this video, we take a look around the 2024 Auto-Trail Excel 620G motorhome:
The 6.20m body length means this doesn’t quite qualify as a compact coachbuilt motorhome, but overall dimensions – not least the narrow 2.24m width – suggest this is a motorhome that can be driven and parked in most places.
The Auto-Trail Excel 620G’s permanent rear transverse double bed floorplan makes light of an ability to carry four travellers and sleep three, with a healthy 700kg-plus payload and garage space under that bed meaning storage is unlikely to be much of an issue.
Access to the garage is via a larger hatch on the offside, smaller one nearside. You’ll be able to get a couple of bikes in, but do note also there are fixing points for a bike rack on the external back wall.
The kitchen is along the nearside of the Auto-Trail Excel 620G with washroom and double travel seat on the offside, the latter partnering up with the swivelled cab seats for a decent enough sized front lounge area, which uses a side-fixing table, while side windows and an opening cab sunroof help get plenty of daylight in.
Kitchen kit includes a Thetford Triplex cooker (three gas burners, combined oven and grill) alongside an inset sink and cover. The mixer tap is one of a number of fittings throughout in black, which adds a modern feel to the styling and neatly complements the flecked, grey work surface.
Also in black here are a rail with hook and a holder for smaller items. There’s also a fold-up worktop extension, plus single locker door overhead, but with two compartments, both shelved, while drawer storage in the main kitchen unit below also includes a dedicated slide-out section for cutlery.
Completing the kitchen is a large capacity (142 litres total) fridge with freezer compartment.
Opposite the kitchen zone, the washroom is an all-in-one affair with swivel-bowl toilet, fixed basin and a curtain to pull around for showering, using the extended tap with water-saving on/off switch. There’s a large expanse of mirror and, as ever, it’s also good to see an opaque window here, as well as plastic-lined walls.
Rear bed dimensions are 1.94m x 1.30m, but it’s access that will be a key determining factor as to whether this Auto-Trail motorhome is right for you. The bed is set high, so there’s a fair clamber up the supplied ladder to get up into it, and you won’t be able to sit upright. The payback is more space in the garage below, of course.
The bedroom area has a window on the nearside and a Heki rooflight overhead, with lockers across the back wall. Above the padded headboard section are switched reading lights on stalks, with further, ambient lighting from the rooflight surround.
A double door under the bed opens to reveal clothes storage – a hanging rail as well as some shelves. This is also the obvious place to stow the extra cushions needed to make up the third sleeping berth (from the lounge seating), although it will be easier to leave these at home if you’re only going to sleep two.
The £61,634 starting price of the Auto-Trail Excel 620G motorhome should really come with the rider that most buyers are going to go for the Driver’s Pack and Lux Pack (check them out for yourselves) upgrades – adding some £3,500 to the bottom line. Nevertheless, it still puts this vehicle very much into bargain territory for a brand new motorhome.

Verdict: Pack up (literally) for a fully featured motorhome that still has a competitive price and a sense of style
Plus: Space-efficient three-berth floorplan, modern styling with some thoughtful touches
Minus: High setting for double bed, just the one shower plughole
In-a-nutshell: A smart looking touch of the small stuff
Alternatives: Bailey Alora 69-4S, Chausson S 514
