2022 Elddis Avanté 585 caravan

Season 2022 is fast coming upon us and it’s no surprise to see – despite all the trials of 2021 – manufacturers like Elddis are pressing ahead with new models. So here’s a particularly family-friendly five-berth caravan from Elddis.

It’s the Elddis Avanté 585 and it majors on seating/beds at either end, as well as also having a fold-up bunk bed at the back. It’s particularly welcome for families because it allows for parents to seat/sleep in the front, while up to three children can have their own area at the back.

It’s a standard enough front lounge set up with parallel settees on either side of a chest of drawers. Likewise, the three-windowed front hints at tradition, while the medium-sized rooflight is a more modern feature, as are – on the outside – the smart front full-width locker and neatly integrated grab handles.

Like all Elddis’s, it’s made using the company’s SoLiD bonded bodywork construction, including the roof, plus GRP skin to the underfloor and aluminium sides.

Inside the Elddis Avanté 585 caravan, light colouring to the furniture and the upholstery helps towards a feeling of spaciousness. And you can always add your own splashes of colour to such a background, of course.

There’s a galley feel to the kitchen. The main unit on the offside houses a full Thetford cooker (three gas rings, electric hotplate, separate oven and grill) on its far right, with a circular sink in matching black enamel finish next to it. A worktop extension, two mains sockets, four LED downlights, drawer and locker storage, plus upper-level cupboards and a small floor locker complete the scene.

Across the corridor, there’s a tall, slimline Dometic 10-series fridge and a microwave oven, the latter in an ideal location for shorter users. Again, there’s a good variety of locker storage here, some of which could easily be used for kitchen kit. And the worktop, although set low so it can accommodate a TV, may also come in handy when it comes to meal preparations.

The double-door wardrobe set over three drawers and a floor locker seems capable of looking after nearly all the clothes storage. There’s a good hanging height in the wardrobe, but you may end up finding its all a bit compromised by stowing the bed ladder and free-standing dining table in here. You’ll want to find a decent storage location for the roll-up mattress for the bunk bed, too.

But, it’s the L-seating at the back that’s the defining feature of the Elddis Avanté 585. It also allows for a deep ledge along the offside. An ideal spot for a TV, perhaps (sockets are here)? There’s also a long section of open shelving beneath.

Making the beds here is straightforward. The bunk folds out to 1.65m x 0.55m and, if you want to make the seating below into a full double a slatted section pulls out for a 1.83m x 1.08m mattress area.

Or you may only need to keep it as a single. A curtain divider offers some privacy from the rest of the living quarters.

The front settees, meanwhile, convert easily enough to a 2.08m x 1.30m double bed.

The washroom is large enough to offer a separate shower cubicle, with a good, deep tray and a water-saving Ecocamel Orbit showerhead on a riser bar. There’s also space for a white plastic countertop basin and swivel-bowl toilet. There’s no window, although there’s a rooflight, while storage is limited to a double-door locker below the basin.

The 585 joins an Avanté line-up for 2022 that includes four single axle models and three with twin axles. There are also Compass Casita variants of each – same prices, same spec’, different colourways – as well as dealer special versions that will boast higher equipment and price levels.
