It’s T for twin single beds here in this translation of a continental favourite end-washroom floor-plan (sister model the 76-4 has a French bed with full-width rear washroom). But, if you’re looking for Al-Ko chassis’d rivals at this price level, you’re going to have to extend beyond UK shores – and even then, few can compete with what Bailey is offering at this price level.
And, although the Advance 76-4 T motorhome can comfortably accommodate four folk for sleeping and travel, all else suggests it will be used primarily by couples who just want some extra living and storage space.
Up front, it’s an open lounge with a half-dinette and inward-facing settee for two. It’s particularly easy two swivel both cab seats to join the lounge ensemble, with a side-fixing table completing the picture.
From the lounge, there’s a step down to the kitchen along the offside mid-‘van. It’s rather small, despite a flip-up worktop that extends over the bed. What it does squeeze in, however, is a Thetford Triplex cooker, square sink (which also gets an add-on drainer and chopping board etc), Dometic 95-litre fridge with removable freezer section, plus a Daewoo microwave oven.
Needless to say, storage is a tad compromised, but there’s a cutlery drawer, double-doored overhead locker, smaller locker over the microwave, and a slim locker to the right of the cooker.
Moving further back, those fixed single beds are set at a level that should make access easy enough for most. Both have one-piece mattresses on slatted bases that hinge out for access to storage space.
There’s a handy ledge for each bed, while LED reading lamps have USB charging outlets. There are also overhead lockers, with handles plus push-button activation for the catches.
A solid door between the beds takes you through to the washroom, which has all the benefits of being across the full width of the vehicle. There’s a decent-sized, plastic-lined cubicle with water-saving Ecocamel shower head in the nearside, while the wardrobe takes the offside, with swivel-bowl toilet just beside it and a fixed basin over a cupboard offset centre.
A mirror with short shelf fills the width, while a single rooflight provides ventilation. Hot water and heating are courtesy of Truma.
Like all Advance motorhomes, Bailey uses the company’s Alu-Tech GRP-clad bodywork construction. The exterior is all-white, but look to closely and there’s some slight colour mismatching.
Bike rack fixings are provided as standard on the back panel, although the windowless habitation door is an instant pointer the costs have been kept down.
Interestingly, the Al-Ko chassis it’s all placed on has outriggers – extra struts to add further rigidity to the overall structure.
There’s more to come on the base vehicle front, of course. At the time of reporting (August 2019), the Advance 76-4 T comes as standard on Peugeot’s Boxer with the two-litre, 130bhp engine, although this is set to be superseded by the next-generation Euro 6.2, 2.2-litre powerplants – Advances will get the 140bhp version of this.
Like other manufacturers, Bailey plans to phase this in throughout the 2020 season – just be warned, however, it will also come with a significant hike in Vehicle Excise Duty!
Verdict: Great mix of value and luxury with a classic end washroom layout
Plus: Al-Ko chassis benefits, competitively priced, generous lounge
Minus: No engine/transmission choices, some cost-paring
