Can you tow a caravan on a normal driving licence?

If you passed your driving test before the start of 1997 you can tow a car and caravan combination weighing up to 8,250 kg as a standard driving licence will include categories B + E.

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM (maximum authorised mass) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM. Or you can tow a trailer over 750kg as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg. This can prove difficult with some modern caravans and towcars. However, it is possible to take an additional driving test to get the B + E categories added to you licence. Bear in mind also that it’s recommended that the weight of your loaded caravan is no more than 85% of your towcar’s kerbweight for a stable towing outfit.
